The Icon of the Chernobyl Savior and Japan’s Nuclear Cleanup

Last spring, the Icon of the Chernobyl Savior was transferred from the Ukraine to an Orthodox Church in Japan, to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters there facing the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in damaged nuclear power plants.

Entering into Lent, this is a good time to keep in memory this icon and in prayer the people of Japan as they engage in stepped-up clean-up of the damaged plants and associated problems such as radiation.

The icon portrays the way in which modern technological worldviews can challenge a balanced life on earth, and how Christ and His Church shelter and offer succor to martyrs of technology and environmental disaster.
